Two representatives from the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers visited St. Hilda’s East Community Centre’s Older People’s Project on Thursday 11 February 2016 and very generously presented a cheque for £1,300.  Older People’s Project members were delighted to welcome Mr Dinesh Naidu and Dr Jeff Bines and greatly enjoyed the chance to show off their own collection of fans.  Vicky Harrison, Co-ordinator of the Older Person’s project said ‘The donation makes an enormous difference to our service users and will help to run our activities, including outings.’  Ernie Wright, a regular user of the Project’s Lunch Club Plus service said ‘It’s an oasis in the desert, it’s good to have company and not be lonely at home’.

Thank you so much for your kind support

Thank you Credit Agricole for taking our Older People’s Project out for the day as part of City Giving Day. Not only did we have a really fun day out, but we also made it onto the Lord mayor’s website!

As part of Volunteers’ Week we thanked our brilliant food co-op team for all their hard work with flowers, chocolates and a certificate.

Without our amazing volunteers so many of our projects wouldn’t be able to run, so THANK YOU!!

On Thursday 12th February, St Hilda’s participated in the Great Legal Bake, a London-wide fundraising effort organised by the London Legal Support Trust. All over the city law firms and legal organisations were invited to bake and sell cake to raise money for free legal advice services.

Staff and users spent the week making and donating cakes for our sale and the variety was fantastic! We also had delicious donations from the Hummingbird Bakery, Dum Dum Donutterie and Julia Thackray. Lily Vanilli donated her gorgeous cookbook as a raffle prize. We also had the help of Bethnal Green Academy, who made and sold bakes of their own on our behalf!

With the enthusiastic assistance of our lovely team of volunteers, we ran a stall alongside our Food Co-op and a rather chilly one outside on Redchurch Street, where we made a lot of friends in local businesses by providing an afternoon cake fix!

Overall we raised £350 for our free legal advice service, which is a fantastic result! Thank you to all our staff and donors for contributing cakes, all our fab sales people and everyone who stopped by!

The centre is now officially 125 years old, having just had our official birthday on October 26th! This year has seen a very exciting programme of events and arts projects and has been very enjoyable for all our users and staff.

Our sponsored walk team for the London Legal Support Trust in May raised a grand total of over £7000, and everyone completed the 10km circuit! There were some sore feet the day after but the whole team finished with a great sense of accomplishment.

Our main event of the summer was our street party, held around the corner from the centre. We had some fantastic live performances of music and dance, a ceilidh dance group that got everyone up and moving, a delicious meal featuring a vintage-inspired lamb and barley stew and a whole range of stalls, activities and excitements! Themed around ‘Then and Now’, the street party illustrated the history of the centre and the local area and also featured an exhibition taken from our archives along with contemporary work done by centre users.

Coming up on November 10th we have our Annual General Meeting, which this year will be a grand celebration of the anniversary! Centre users and pupils from a local primary school will perform a song specially written for the occasion, and there will be performances and presentations from a number of projects. The event will finish up with a traditionally delicious St Hilda’s meal, and should be a fitting highlight to our anniversary year. Come and join us at 6pm to celebrate St Hilda’s East!

As part of our 125th Anniversary celebrations, a team of staff members from St Hilda’s are walking 10km on May 19th to raise money for our centre! Our target amount is £2000, which will go towards sustaining our much-needed services and continuing the centre’s long tradition of service to the community.

We would love any support possible from members of our community, and if you would like to show your love for St Hilda’s by sponsoring us, you can do so online at
