What our community says
“My time here passes so quickly. At home, hours pass like days but here, the day passes in minutes!”
“I feel I am not too old to learn new things. I feel alive!”
“I am happy here, talking to people I can socialise and be in touch.”
Sonali Gardens Day Centre is located in Shadwell and provides culturally appropriate, person-centred care and support throughout the week, predominantly for local Bangladeshi older people.
Referrals for attending Sonali Gardens Day Centre is via Tower Hamlets social services.
Sonali is Bengali for ‘golden’. We are really proud that Sonali Gardens is recognised as a model for national good practice in culturally-sensitive service delivery for older people.
Sonali Gardens welcomed and supported by a team of bi-lingual Bengali speaking staff, our kitchen prepares fresh halal meals each day, and people can use the purpose-built prayer rooms and other bespoke facilities.
At the day centre you can relax in the day rooms, spend time in the garden and engage in a variety of acivities such as seated exercise, arts, news and current affairs, as well as opportunities to spend time in our local community at shops and the city farm for example.
People at Sonali Gardens support us in what we can offer and develop through our Service User’s forum which meets regularly and is chaired by one of our service users.
We work in partnership with our local community supporting local schools and colleges through inter-generational activity sessions and student work experience placements.
Sonali Gardens Day Centre works closely with LinkAge Plus to enable cross-project work in bringing together older people from different sections of the community.
