This year, St. Hilda’s East has continued to help This year, St. Hilda’s East has continued to help residents navigate complex financial and housing challenges, ensuring they can access the money they are owed.

One client, aged 65+, had a council tax credit of £605 following the passing of her son but had no bank account to receive the refund. Our team helped her set up an online council tax account and arranged for the refund to be paid via a family member’s account. This not only secured her money but also enabled her to manage any future council tax payments independently.

Cases like this highlight how persistent, personalised support can make a real difference. As services increasingly move online, many residents face barriers in accessing the money they are owed. St. Hilda’s East continues to ensure no one is left behind, providing guidance, advocacy, and practical solutions to reclaim what is rightfully theirs.

At St. Hilda’s East, our work is guided by our values: we are approachable, responsive, and evolving. These principles shape everything we do to support migrants in Tower Hamlets.

We provide practical support, welcoming spaces, and opportunities that help migrants thrive. This includes access to advice services, social and cultural activities, and skills-building programmes such as IT workshops, language classes, and creative projects. These services help people feel confident, connected, and able to fully participate in community life.

Take the example of a service user who came to England from Bangladesh in 1978. After a heart attack and multiple strokes, he became wheelchair-bound and lost his ability to speak clearly. In 2011, he was awarded a day care placement at Sonali Gardens Day Centre, where he joined activities, socialised with other service users, and reconnected with the wider community through our transport and outreach services.

Since joining the centre, he has made remarkable progress. He can now walk independently using a tripod support, communicate clearly, and has regained confidence. He has built friendships, reduced frustration from past speech difficulties, and completed an IT course, receiving a certificate from the Poplar HARCA Digital Inclusion Team. His story shows how access to practical support, social connection, and learning opportunities can transform lives.

We are committed to ensuring everyone in Tower Hamlets can feel part of a supportive community and take positive steps toward their future. Stories like this service user’s show the tangible difference that community support and inclusion can make.
